Sharpen edges with a convolution filter

This image sharpening tool strengthens the edges in an image using a convolution filter, at a strength you set with a slider. Choose an image, adjust the strength, and download the crisper result. Edges are where sharpness is perceived, so emphasizing them makes details such as text, stitching and outlines stand out more clearly. The effect applies evenly across the whole image.

Best on mildly soft images

Sharpening suits photos that are nearly right: a slightly soft product shot, a screenshot that will be shown small, or an image that lost a little crispness when resized down. It is a finishing step rather than a rescue: the closer the original is to acceptable, the more convincing the improvement at moderate strength settings.

Good to know

Sharpening cannot restore a blurred original, because the detail a blur removed is not hidden in the file waiting to be recovered. At high strengths the filter adds halos around strong edges, bright outlines that look artificial, so more is not always better here.

Frequently asked questions

Can sharpening fix a blurry or out-of-focus photo?

No. Sharpening increases edge contrast in detail already recorded; it cannot recreate detail that was never captured or was destroyed by blur. A mildly soft image improves noticeably, but a blurred photo will still look blurred.

What strength should I start with?

Begin near the middle of the slider, the default of 50, and compare at display size. Small display sizes tolerate stronger sharpening; large images show halos sooner, so lower settings usually look more natural there.

Are my images uploaded to a server?

No. Files are processed in your browser and never sent to the site's server. The filter runs on your device and the sharpened image downloads from your browser, so the original never leaves your machine.
