What this tool does
This tool lets you add line numbers to any text or list, numbering every line so entries can be referenced, quoted or reviewed in order. You choose the starting number and the separator style, such as 1. or 1) or 1:, and the numbered list is ready to copy. It suits code excerpts, meeting notes, lyrics and checklists. Your pasted text itself is not changed.
Choosing the starting number and separator
Start at 1 for a fresh list, or set a higher starting number when your text continues from an earlier numbered section. The separator sits between each number and its line: a period is the most common choice, while a parenthesis or colon can read better in documents that already use numbered headings of their own.
Good to know
Blank lines are numbered too, because every line in the input receives a number in sequence. If your list should have no gaps, delete empty lines before you run the tool. Otherwise later numbers will run higher than the count of visible items.
Frequently asked questions
How do I add numbers to each line of text?
Paste your text with one item per line, choose the starting number and separator, then click Add Numbers. Copy the numbered list from the result.
Can I start numbering from a number other than 1?
Yes. Set the Start at field to any whole number, and the first line receives that number, with each following line counting up from there.
Is my text sent anywhere?
No. The numbering happens in your browser on this page, so your text stays on your device and is not uploaded or stored by the tool.
