What this paragraph counter does

This paragraph counter counts the paragraphs in a document, where each block of text separated by a blank line counts as one paragraph. Paste an essay, article or report and the total appears right away. It is a quick structural check before submitting schoolwork, publishing a post, or sending a document that must follow a set format. The count appears on this same page.

How paragraphs are detected

The tool looks for blank lines: wherever an empty line divides two blocks of text, a new paragraph begins. Headings on their own lines count as blocks too. If your count seems off, check that every paragraph break in the document is a genuinely blank line rather than a single line break.

Good to know

Single line breaks without a blank line do not start a new paragraph here. Text copied from editors that use soft line breaks may therefore count as fewer paragraphs than you expect. Add a blank line between blocks before counting for the most accurate result.

Frequently asked questions

How do I count paragraphs in a document?

Paste your text, making sure paragraphs are separated by blank lines, then click Run. The tool counts the blocks and shows the paragraph total on the page.

Why does my document show fewer paragraphs than I wrote?

Paragraphs joined by single line breaks, with no empty line between them, are counted as one block. Insert a blank line between each paragraph and run the count again.

Does the tool store my document?

No. The paragraph counter runs in your browser, so your document stays on your device and is not uploaded, sent anywhere, or stored by the tool.

How to use Paragraph Counter

  2. Separate paragraphs with a blank line.
  3. Read the count as you type.

Limitations

Single line breaks without a blank line do not start a new paragraph here; use blank lines between blocks.
