What this word counter does

Paste or type any text into the box and this word counter totals the words it contains, showing an estimated reading time beside the count. It suits essays, articles, assignments and speeches where a target length matters. There is nothing to install and no account to create: the count happens on this page, and you can copy the result as soon as it appears.

How the count is worked out

The tool splits your text on whitespace and counts each group of characters as one word, then divides the total by an average reading speed to estimate reading time. Punctuation attached to a word stays part of that word. Separate counters on this site measure characters, sentences and paragraphs on their own.

Good to know

Reading time assumes 200 words per minute, a common average pace. Fast readers will finish sooner and slow readers will take longer, so treat the figure as a guide rather than a promise. Reading aloud usually runs slower, so allow extra time for speeches.

Frequently asked questions

How do I count the words in my text?

Paste or type your text into the box and click Run. The word count and the reading-time estimate appear together, and you can copy them with the copy button.

Is the reading time exact?

No. It is calculated at 200 words per minute, a common average. Your own pace may be faster or slower, so use the figure for planning rather than precise timing.

Is my text uploaded anywhere?

No. The counting runs in your browser on this page, so your text stays on your device. It is not sent to a server or stored by the tool.
