What this text to binary converter does

This text to binary converter writes each character of your text as an 8-bit binary byte, separated by spaces. Characters are stored in computers as numbers, and this converter shows each number in base 2: the letter A, code 65, becomes 01000001. Paste or type text and read the byte sequence that represents it, ready to copy or compare. The groups stay in the same order as your characters.

When to use it

Use it for learning how text is stored, preparing examples for coursework, or checking an encoding by hand. Because the output is grouped into labelled bytes rather than one endless stream of digits, you can point at any group and name its character — and convert it back with the matching Binary to Text Converter to prove the round trip.

Good to know

Conversion works per code unit across the basic multilingual plane. Most everyday characters take one unit and so produce one byte group, but emoji and rare characters are stored as two units, so they produce two groups. That is how the underlying encoding works, not an error in the output.

Frequently asked questions

Why does one emoji produce two byte groups?

Characters beyond the basic range are stored as a pair of code units called a surrogate pair, and this converter converts each unit separately. Two groups for one emoji is therefore correct behaviour and matches how the text is really stored.

What does 8-bit mean here?

Each character's code is written with exactly eight binary digits, padding with leading zeros where the number is small. Eight bits make one byte, the standard unit of storage, which is why the output reads as a row of bytes.

How do I check my result is right?

Take one group and convert it back to decimal, then look up that code: 01000001 is 65, the letter A. Or paste the whole output into the Binary to Text Converter and confirm your original text comes back unchanged.

How to use Text to Binary Converter

  1. Type or paste text.
  2. Click Run.
  3. Copy the binary result.

Limitations

Conversion covers the basic multilingual plane per code unit; emoji and rare characters use two units.
