What this text hash generator does
This text hash generator computes the SHA-256 or SHA-1 fingerprint of any text that you type or paste, right inside your own browser. Paste the text, choose an algorithm, and copy the resulting string of hexadecimal characters. Identical text always produces the identical hash, so comparing two hashes is a quick way to confirm that a piece of content has not changed.
What hashes are used for
Hashes help verify integrity: checking that a copied value matches the original exactly, fingerprinting text for deduplication, and confirming downloads or stored records against a published reference value. SHA-256 is the usual choice for new work. SHA-1 remains available here for comparing against older values that were published in that format.
Good to know
Only SHA-256 and SHA-1 are offered; there is no MD5 option. A matching hash shows content is unchanged, not that it is safe or genuine, and a hash cannot be reversed to recover the original text, so keep the text itself.
Frequently asked questions
Should I choose SHA-256 or SHA-1?
Choose SHA-256 for anything new; it is the stronger, current standard. Pick SHA-1 only when you are comparing against a hash that was already published in SHA-1, since the two algorithms give different results for the same text.
Can I turn a hash back into the text?
No. Hashing is one-way by design, so the original text cannot be recovered from its hash. If you need the text later, store the text; the hash only lets you check a copy against it.
Why does one changed letter alter the whole hash?
That sensitivity is the point of a hash function: even a tiny edit produces a completely different fingerprint. It is what makes hashes reliable for spotting changes, including ones too small to notice by eye.
How to use Text Hash Generator
- Type or paste text.
- Choose SHA-256 or SHA-1.
- Click Run and copy the hash.
Limitations
A hash proves content matches, not that it is safe or authentic; hashes cannot be reversed to recover text.
