What this tip calculator does

This tip calculator takes a bill, applies a tip percentage that you choose and can split the outcome fairly between any number of people. It shows the tip amount, the total bill including the tip and each person’s share, so nobody at the table has to do mental arithmetic at the moment the check arrives and the shares need settling.

How the split works

The tip is the bill multiplied by the chosen percentage, and the total is the bill plus that tip. Splitting then divides the combined total by the number of people. The same percentage applied to the same bill always produces the same tip — what changes with group size is only how the combined total is shared out.

Good to know

Shares are rounded to two decimals, so when a total does not divide exactly, the last person’s share may differ by a cent from the others. The calculator keeps the combined total correct rather than forcing every share to look identical — worth knowing if the group is collecting exact amounts from everyone.

Frequently asked questions

Should the tip be calculated before or after tax?

Customs differ by place and preference. The calculator applies your percentage to whatever bill amount you enter, so use the pre-tax subtotal or the full total according to your own custom.

How do I split the bill between five people?

Enter the bill, choose the tip percentage, then enter five as the number of people. The calculator adds the tip first and divides the combined total, including each person’s share of the tip.

Can I use a custom tip percentage?

Yes — the percentage is an input, not a fixed choice. Enter whatever percentage you intend to leave, following local custom or your judgment of the service, and all figures follow from it.
