What this sales tax calculator does

This sales tax calculator works in both directions: add sales tax to a net price to find the total a customer pays, or start from a tax-inclusive price and extract the tax portion already inside it. Enter the price and your local rate, choose which direction you need, and the tax amount and the other price appear together, giving you the complete picture for receipts, quotes and invoices.

The two calculations

Adding tax multiplies the net price by the rate: tax = price × rate ÷ 100, and the total is the price plus the tax. Extracting works in reverse — the tax contained in a tax-inclusive price is that price multiplied by rate ÷ (100 + rate), not simply the rate applied to the full amount.

Good to know

No rate is assumed for you, because sales tax varies by state, city and even product type. Enter the exact rate that applies to your purchase or sale. If your area layers several taxes into one combined rate, add them together first, since the calculator applies a single percentage.

Frequently asked questions

How do I remove sales tax from a total?

Choose the tax-included direction and enter the total price and rate. The calculator separates the total into the net price and the tax inside it — what bookkeeping and receipt checks require.

Why isn’t the tax just the rate times the total?

Because the total already contains the tax, applying the rate to it would tax the tax. Extraction divides by (100 + rate) first, correctly separating the original price from the tax added.

Which rate should I enter?

The combined rate that legally applies where the sale happens — state plus local additions where relevant. The calculator cannot look rates up, so check your tax authority’s published rate if unsure.
